Terra-Nova (Imagining New Grounds):

Typology: Micro Nation
Location:  Liberland & Napredak
Status: Competition

"Liberland invites you to challenge the contemporary urban and architectural design status quo by responding to Liberland’s fundamental values and to envision the full design potential for this new micronation... Your proposal must also include design scenarios that creatively engage the theoretical, social, and technological implications of distributed intelligence systems, such as Blockchain. On a functional level, Liberland has no zoning regulations or municipal restrictions. It has no pre-established design culture. The field is wide open for innovation on every scale. Liberland’s new architecture will be absolutely vital to its survival, success and advancement towards its aspirations ...".

Intro:

Liberland is the land of liberation, unlike any other city. Liberland is a new form of community and place for true sense of living. Liberland is a city where interactions are converged in an unprecedented way. Citizens live, coincide, and find meaning for their lives in the most natural way. City’s interaction with earth is differed furthermore. The City doesn’t just ruin its ground to erect out of straight lines of roads and buildings, it grows. Similar forces that create the geometry of galaxies and our solar system were castoff to simulate a vortex condition, where the mass undergoes the same fuzzy trajectory of which matter has gone through to formulate life, millions of years ago. Liberland is where novelty takes place.

This is a city that is not accessible in a typical way nor is it convenient. The city proposes new ways of living, gathering, socializing, and constructing. Liberland is continuous. Nothing disturbs its landscapes to fall vertically into the sky. Liberland welcomes people from all around the world. Entering the city happens at a specific point, not as a gate but as a point of reference. The entry is where the first shed was built. The location of the shed has now become the ceremonial government building. A symbolic portal that is empty of any other functionality; it is the first of its kind. There are various areas in liberland’s setting, where there is no definite program assigned. Empty of meaning and functionality, the supposed undetermined spaces are to be reputed as needed by the citizens. The goal of the citizens is to be present in the nowness. Free of the politics of any other city they have known before, the citizens will collaborate to design the experimental space to fulfill needs, wants and perhaps a sense of primordial purpose; and in doing so, a factual community will form.

Liberland offers autonomous architecture. Architecture that adapts and evolves. Liberland is ephemeral, always changing and mutating. It will always be a step ahead of any other city. Liberland is amorphous; its shape is driven by the citizen’s essentials, directions, and decisions. It’s automated, modular, plug and play construction capability, fabricated, and assembled by the robotics, allows for an elastic configuration. The level of advancement in Liberlands construction not only allows for unfathomable configurations, but it also allows for literal deconstruction and reconstruction of any part and section of the city. This way Liberland is always in tune with wishes of its citizens.

Systems at work:

With newborn complexities in our social interactions, the solutions require creative responses for a truly adaptive and intelligent environment. This built environment has been radicalized into an intelligent structural system to be able to maximize efficiency, productivity, and playfulness. The city itself is an architect in a way it is no longer waiting for instructions. Instead of waiting for directions, the city will self-diagnose and propose solutions that will create spaces of fulfillment, in perspective of the needs of the individual and the collective. This way the artificial intelligence of the city will work as an extension of the citizen’s tool set, and the collaboration between the two will generate multiple adaptive solutions. This new paradigm of human, AI and machines working harmoniously, to create a habitat, will be the new norm in systems of convention of city planning.

The funding of the city is emanated from systematic cryptocurrency mining, the capital’s primary source of revenue. A particular location is dedicated as the ‘mining farm’ which has room to update and grow as the city does. Liberland’s C-Farm will be the pioneer in green and sustainable cryptocurrency mining. Utilizing advanced methods such as spherical photovoltaic panels that will produce electricity around the clock, and heat suction from the server rooms, will substantiate cryptocurrency as the currency for the green future.

Construction:

The city’s infrastructure, utilities, core, and shell are all composed of smart panelized systems. All The systems are designed to plug and play with the capability to be replaced or removed as required. Each smart panel is able communicate and send critical analytics back to the cloud so the real-time data can be used to build the next generation of smart panels exceptionally enhanced. Each modular panel has a dedicated assembly line assigned to it; where it gets built out from its necessary components and materials inside the Factory. Liberland’s factory or the M-Lab is premeditated to work like a car factory such as Tesla, where close to 100% of the components of the end product (in this case all of the city’s components) is to be manufactured in-house. Vast intelligent assembly lines composed of static robotic arms which will put each smart panel together to be carried and installed via the mobile robots. All the essential raw materials such as, aluminum, crystal, aggregates, graphene, transistors etc., will come from either external importation of direct trading with other countries (capital coming from the C-Farm), or from Liberland’s own recycling facility. The recycling facility known as the Reclaim Zone intakes all the trash generated from the city and reclaims it into raw and reusable materials. The full recycling of all materials, utilization of passive and active systems, and construction via smart paneling systems, makes Liberland the first Net-Zero city in the world.

Epilogue:

Liberland is a city built by the machine but programmed by humans. The construction of liberland is no longer a traditional system of schematic, design development progressed into construction document. The construction in Liberland is a learning process and optimization through collaboration and invention. Therefore, it is not to be understood in a sequence of beginning to end but, to be understood as a continuous and seamless process of linking fabrication into user-based augmentation. Architecture in liberland liberates itself from simply creating an object to live in, onto continuous recasting of space and imagination.
